Ways to Make Sure You Stay Balanced in Life
Written by Brittany Weiss

Coping with the complex and diverse challenges of everyday life is not always an easy task and can upset the balance and harmony we often seek. We are pulled in from many different directions – work, family, religion obligations, nutrition, fitness, education and so much more.

Now, how in the world can we find balance? This is a common struggle for many good people. By good I mean the type of people who are worrying more on the things (or people) they need to take care of, and less on themselves. This is because balance starts with you. Balance is not a statistic matter in which you achieve it or don’t achieve it, it is a series of decisions that you must make each day on how you will allocate your limited resources. When you’re balanced, you can feel it. You get the sense that your life is moving along steadily. You feel healthy and vibrant, challenged by your everyday life, but relaxed enough to enjoy it.

However, the big question is; what does life balance really mean? What would a balanced life look like to us? Lastly and most importantly, how do we go about achieving it in the midst of our crazy schedules? There are steps we all can take to change what isn’t working to gain some control and balance in our lives. The key is not to try to change everything at once, but to make small adjustments over time to determine what suits your needs best. With time, you will gain many positive life habits.

Some strategies that work:

Unplug It – Disconnect on the weekends. If your lifestyle doesn’t allow you an entire day without your cell phones or computers try it for a afternoon, or a couple hours one evening. Spend extra time interacting with family and friends. Give your work brain a rest and enjoy the beauty of your beautiful life.

Prioritize – What is most important? On any given day, in any given moment, what is your priority? To stay the course, you may have to re-examine your priorities regularly.

Long-Term and Short-Term Goals – In business this is called “Tactics and Strategy.” Strategy is the long-term goal, the big picture. Tactics are the combination of short-term goals that will help you get to your long-term goal. This helps track progress.

Minimize Interaction With Toxic People – Minimize the negative influences around you. Avoid toxic people such as complainers, whiners, bullies and those with constant poor attitudes. Surround yourself with positive, supportive people as much as possible.

Pay Attention to Your Health – It is often said we are far more productive and happier when we get enough sleep, eat healthy, and fit in daily exercise. Your health truly does affect the quality of our lives and work.

Each of us are currently in a different stage of our lives. Some are heading back to work or school, others are sending their kids off to a new adventure, changing jobs, getting married or divorced, moving into a new town, and some might simply be living life as usual. However, it is important to remember you are always in transition. This trick to living a balanced life is to always keep in mind “balance is the process of holding something(s) steady during change (Barth2014).”
