Congratulations to all participants of the 6th Annual Invictus Athlete Online Competition! We saw some incredible performances, lots of new PRs and some really inspirational moments of athletes conquering workouts they thought would beat them. We accomplished exactly what we set out to do, which was truly test you before the 2018 CrossFit Games season so you know where you are strong and weak relative to other competitors.
This is a good time to take a look at your results and decide how you are going to work over the next 9 weeks to prepare for your best CrossFit Games season.
As coaches, we look at our Athletes’ results from this competition and adjust the training accordingly. We encourage you to do the same, look at your performances and assess what areas you may need to focus on over the next 9 weeks. For example…
- Athletes who flew through Event 4 at lightning speed, but scored fairly low in Events 2 and 3 will need to consider adjusting their training to prioritize strength and power.
- Athletes who performed well on Day 1 but then struggled through Day 2 and/or Event 11 may need to prioritize their conditioning and ability to tolerate high density bodyweight movements.
- Athletes who struggled on Event 6’s short duration sprint event, but found that their ranking was much higher on Event 8 where they had more time to grind and pass more powerful competitors, may want to consider incorporating higher intensity, shorter intervals – rather than longer aerobic base building efforts.
- If you struggled on Event 1’s snatches or Event 9’s clean and jerk, consider whether you’re primarily limited by technique or strength, and how you can best address that in the next 9 weeks. If your gymnastics skills or strength endurance posed the bigger problem, consider how you will make sure you prioritize those areas with a planned progression.
These are all things that we look at as coaches to help inform how we will modify programs for our athletes, and all of these areas are emphasized in the program options we offer. This is why Invictus Athlete has daily options for Olympic weightlifting, aerobic endurance, gymnastics skills, strength development, etc…, and why we also offer these as stand-alone supplemental programs.
When movement mechanics and technique are issues, we encourage people to take advantage of online video review from their assigned coach through either Invictus Athlete+ or remote coaching.
You all get about a week to deload before the Open Prep Cycle, so please use this time to reflect on this past year’s training, your goals for 2018 and what you need to propel you to reach those goals. We would love to help you however we can, whether it’s by helping you assess your needs and guiding you to the right program or by designing personalized programs for you to have your best Open yet. Please let us know how we can help by emailing us at info@invictusathlete.com.
We are always excited about this time of year! The start of 2018 brings the start of several new cycles for our Online Training Programs. Whether you need a Comprehensive Program or a Supplemental Program to dial in your skills, we are confident we can help you have a successful CrossFit Open. Take a look at some of the programs we offer and see which one will help you with your best CrossFit Open score yet.
