Why Should You Build Your Squat, Deadlift and Bench?

Why Should You Build Your Squat, Deadlift and Bench?
Written by Holden Rethwill

Let me ask you this question… 40, 50, 60 years from now do you still want to be fully functioning and capable of taking care of yourself? I know I sure do. Obviously not everything is under our control because life happens, but why wouldn’t you do everything in your power to stay in control of your life and health for as long as you can?

That’s The Power of Strength Training

That’s why building strength NOW, in the right way, is so important. Sure big bench press, deadlift, or squat numbers might seem vain to some and that’s ok. What doesn’t seem vain to me is the ability to stand up under my own power, to pick things up when they fall to the ground, to be able to hold my daughter and hopefully someday grandchildren up. That’s what strength training can do for you. Put aside all the numbers, the egos and whatever else may sound unappealing to you and boil it down to that; maintain your ability to do the things you want under your own power for as long as you can!

Why Squat, Deadlift and Bench?

Now, all that said, I’m sure there’s some of you that already understand this so you want to know a little more about what these three movements can do for you from a performance standpoint. Let me put it this way; we’ve all seen the pyramids, right? How many of those have the point at the bottom and the HUGE base at the top? Spoiler alert, none of them.

If you want to get strong, and I mean truly strong, then building these foundational lifts first is paramount:

  • Squat
  • Deadlift
  • Bench

Without a foundation you’ll have nothing to build off of, just like without their giant foundations the pyramids wouldn’t be standing today.

So, whether you’re a professional athlete (check out Saquan Barkely back squatting well over 500lbs) or you’re still in your younger developmental phase, NO ONE is too good for the basics and no one is too strong to keep working on their foundation!

Build Your Total Strength

Our new Total Strength program aims to deliver on both of these points. Experienced athletes that want to continue to get stronger? We’ve got you. Younger/developmental athletes that need to work on building their base before getting to some of the tip of the pyramid stuff? This is for you. Not an athlete but you just want to build a foundation of strength to maintain through the rest of your life? Look no further. We’ve built this out so that everyone stands to gain from this program because no one ever complained about being too strong!
