The Modern Gypsies take on Kenya!
Written by Taylor Filasky

As many of you know, we have a lot of amazing members here at Invictus. But did you know we have a reality tv show winner amongst us? Taylor, Eric, and John secretly trained at Invictus to compete on ABC’s Expedition Impossible – and won! Eric and John have since moved to San Francisco, with John actually becoming a strength and conditioning coach at CrossFit San Francisco, but you may have seen Taylor around the gym. And not only that, they used the exposure from the show to do good in the world. After winning the show, they formed The Modern Gypsies and began taking what they call “Compassionate Adventures”. One act of compassion, one big adventure.

Last year they went to Ecuador with two goals; to summit Cotopaxi (they’re not mountaineers) and install a clean water project for the village of Gulahuayco. They successfully completed both goals and were able to share the experience with our viewers. (You can view them here)

This year, they take on Kenya! They’ll will be riding motorcycles across the vast country and will be teaming up with their friend Greg Spencer of the Paradigm Project. He is a man on a mission and with his partnership with Ezy Life stoves, his goal is to bring 5 million clean burning stoves to the continent by 2020. That’s a lot of stoves, but why?

Well, did you know that nearly half the people in the world cook over an open fire? This can lead to deforestation, respiratory disease and poverty. The solution: clean burning stoves, which are “cleaner burning, more efficient, simply better stoves reduce wood consumption and toxic smoke. This leads to a better life, a brighter future and social, environment and economic change.”

They will also be checking in with a group called Riders for Health, who distribute medical supplies via motorbike to rural villages in Kenya. They may also have a few other tricks up their sleeves so follow them on Facebook and tune in for upcoming webisodes when they return.
