The debate over whether CrossFitters would benefit from wearing weightlifting shoes has been ongoing, but the answer is a resounding yes when going for 1RM! For barbell cycling however, it depends on the weight. Drawing from traditional weightlifting, the best athletes in the world rely on these shoes for a reason. Weightlifting shoes provide stability, support, and improved posture during heavy lifts, making them invaluable for training.

Why Wear Weightlifting Shoes As A CrossFitter?

  1. Enhanced Stability: The elevated heel and sturdy construction of weightlifting shoes help maintain proper form and balance, reducing the risk of injury.
  2. Improved Posture: The heel lift allows for better squat depth and upright torso, crucial for lifts like snatches and clean and jerks.
  3. Force Transfer: These shoes aid in more efficient force transfer from the ground, enhancing overall lift performance.

When to Wear Flats:

While weightlifting shoes are great for most training sessions, CrossFit competitors need versatility. Occasionally, competitions may require lifting in flat shoes. Historically, only a few events have mandated this, but it’s wise to train occasionally in flats to be prepared.

Training Recommendation:

Adopt a 90/10 rule in your training:

  • 90% in Weightlifting Shoes: Use them for most of your heavy lifting sessions to reap the benefits of stability and improved mechanics.
  • 10% in Flats: Occasionally practice lifting in flat shoes to stay adaptable for any competition scenario.

In conclusion, incorporating weightlifting shoes into your CrossFit regimen can significantly enhance your performance and safety. Embrace the old-school wisdom and lift heavy with confidence!
