Descending from Legless Rope Climbs
Video by Hunter Britt
The rope climb descent can be a difficult skill to master. Here are some tips to make yours speedy, yet safe. Remember, practice makes perfect so don’t wait until your competition day, or even just a few days out to start working on this important skill.
How to Descend from Legless Rope Climbs
When performing the descent coming from a legless rope climb, it is important to keep your hips close to the rope as you drop with control.
As you are descending it is important to keep your hands hovering around the rope and just allowing enough space between the rope and your fingers to not cause rope burn.
When you are at the point that you are ready to stop you must clamp very hard with your hands and thighs to stop yourself at the bottom. It absolutely must be an aggressive clamp or you run the risk of rope burn on your inner legs and hands and that never makes for a fun training session.
To get comfortable practice dropping just 1-2 feet at a time and gradually work your way up to a full descent. Please, do not climb to the top and let go without building confidence that you are in control.
