Keith and Arron at Base Camp on Everest

How Invictus Athlete Helped Him Climb Everest
Written by Kelly Sekulovski

When they initially booked the bucket list trip to climb the Himalaya’s over two and half years ago, Keith and his son Arron (from LN CrossFit – based in the UK and a part of the Invictus Affiliate Program), knew they needed to get into shape if they were going to make it to the basecamp at Everest. Arron, just 11 years old at the time, would need to start seriously training for those conditions.

When they met Invictus Coach Holden Rethwill at the 2022 Rogue Invitational, he recommended that Arron start training on the Invictus Athlete program to prepare for their big adventure. Now at 13, he has been following Invictus Athlete ever since.

Their Adventure To Basecamp

“The Invictus training program was fundamental in the training for our adventure, providing him with the relevant strength and fitness, alongside Hypoxic Training (a type of exercise using specialist equipment that involves breathing reduced oxygen to stimulate the environment experienced at higher altitudes) to allow us to complete the trek without the need for any other specific training methods,” said Keith, who also follows Invictus programming.

“Once we reached our starting elevation following a helicopter flight in to Sirke at around 9,000ft, we ascended each day to reach Everest Base Camp at 17,598ft. We also extended our trek to reach higher altitudes through the likes of the Cho La Pass and back down to the Gokyo Lakes. Overall we managed to cover well over 80 miles whilst simultaneously ascending and descending over 20,000ft during our 14 days trekking.”

At just 13 years old, Arron can cross this off of his bucket list.
