The Longhorn (Louisiana) poses with his wife after completion of the 2017 CrossFit Open.
My First Open: The Longhorn’s Story

I’ve really only been doing legit CrossFit since last May/June when I started following this blog which is also when I got access to a full range of equipment.
As of this morning (the day after 17.5 results were tallied), I was 955 worldwide for my age group (35-39), and 43rd worldwide for Law Enforcement for my age group. I’m pretty pumped with my results but also found a ton to work on – squat snatch, thrusters, and everything dumbbell to name a few.
When you’re doing the same workouts as the pros it makes you intimately aware of how insanely fit they are!
It’s been a lot of fun competing each week and beating myself up to get a better score, but my body can’t take another week of it. Shout out to my wife and judge for pushing me through the dark spots! Thanks Invictus for all the support and wonderful programming!
Coach’s note:
Anyone who follows the Performance blog and reads the comments from others who do knows who The Longhorn is, not only because he is constantly crushing workouts (even in the brutal Louisiana heat) and adding “fun” finishers to his training but because of the ongoing encouragement he provides to his fellow athletes and the help he gives the new members to the group on how to navigate the workouts.
One of the Open workouts that I was especially impressed with his results was 17.4 where he got through 46 of the handstand push-ups which was a point in the workout that stopped many in their tracks. His efforts earned him 56th place in his division for that week (his top placing was 52nd on 17.1).
This is all amazing and wonderful in itself but becomes even more so when you learn that The Longhorn is also balancing a career as a federal law enforcement officer along with sharing responsibilities with his wife in taking care of his young family.
It is great to hear his perspective and pointenent questions regarding training and nutrition as he is always looking to improve while maintaining optimal health which I learned in a recent phone call we had.
He is a model member of the Invictus community for sure and one we are proud to call an Invicti. Thank you for being a part of our (online) community, Matthew!
